Dam Sith

Dam Sith

Dam Sith created the pro-opporsition newspaper in 1996. At the time, it was promoting the political ideas of the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), which merged with the Human Rights Party in 2012 to become the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP).

In 2009, Dam Sith was sued by the CPP for the 3 time since 2006 for defamation, disinformation and incitement. He wrote a letter of apology to the Prime Minister and offered to close the newspaper in return for the cessation of criminal charges against him. In 2008, he had spent a week in prison in pre-trial detention for the same charges.

In 2010, the Ministry of Information granted Sith the authorization to start its publication again. In 2013, he was elected a CNRP lawmaker in Phnom Penh and threatened with a lawsuit after after his paper stood by its article accusing Prime Minister Hun Sen of using the military to illegally gain votes in the national polls.
