Radio Free Asia belongs to the American government. It is a sister media non-profit company of Voice of America. RFA is mandated to broadcast to China, Tibet, North Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Burma. RFA’s programming primarily comprises domestic news and information of unique and specific interest to its listeners. All broadcasts are solely in local language(s) and dialects.
Radio Free Asia is a private, nonprofit corporation that is funded by the U.S. Government through an annual grant from the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), an independent federal agency charged with overseeing all U.S. civilian international broadcasting.

Broadcasts in nine Asian languages were introduced on the following dates:
Mandarin, launched 9/96, 12 hours of programming per day, 7 days a week. One and one half additional hours weekly in the Wu (Shanghai) dialect.
Tibetan, launched 12/96 in Uke dialect, and added Kham dialect on 5/97, and Amdo dialect on 5/97 - 10 hours of programming per day, 7 days a week
